Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't ever remember seeing the floor B level in either direction in chamber 8 E old vein, (stairs chamber). Maybe this is only because I've been concentrating on all the fall on the floor and trying to avoid falling head first Sad
Is the floor B levels east and west actually accessible so you can look into the neighbouring chambers or are they hidden by fall?

Come to think of it I've never headed straight across on floor A to see what lies to the east. Maybe because chamber 8 E tends to be on route to the better travelled bits where one aims for when in a group.

Also I have never felt like lingering too long there due to instability, (although I have seen worse places)

It's a few years since I ventured into 8E, walking down to Fl. C from Fl. A. The ceiling has been falling in and I haven't wanted it on my head. I've a vague feeling I have seen Fl. B tunnels - logical they must be there! Probably no access from 7 or 9E due to missing bridges. Will have to have a look up from Fl. D next time I'm in. Don't think you'd see them from the bottom of the stairway if you went across the chamber (quickly!!) after climbing the ladder to Fl. C from Fl. D, 7E. Wouldn't really like to go up into the chamber via what's left of the stairway... Shocked

The stairs still seem Ok'ish, but the chamber needs care and attention to traverse, and I advise against taking newbies there. There are safer ways around now, especially with the accessibility of the "water connection" on floor E

on a related note, was just wondering if anyone knows where the hole through the roof of chamber 8E goes? - I suspect probably nowhere as I haven't seen it on the plans. Has anyone actually looked up there? What, I wonder, where the quarrymen trying to do?

The floor B tunnel on the east side of 8E is easy to spot, it's just behind that big fallen block.

Marty's photo shows it clearly:

Photo also shows the hole through the roof. Never looked in that myself, but I remember a group (Marty, Speedy, Llion IIRC and probably some others) laddered up there a good few years back Thumb Up Turned out not to go anywhere I think.

They are the floor A ones you are looking at there.

8E does have a level on B going west, and you can find it quite easily, although it is not visible from the stairs.

Just cut across the chamber in the middle of the chamber to the other wall and you'll actually see another staircase, older than the more familiar one, and there you will see the level leading to 7E. With no bridge though, you can't do much more.

I'm pretty sure there is one on B going east too, but it's below the back-fill. I seem to remember if you climb down 9E you can get to it but of course it just goes through the wall and meets rubble.

There is also a level on C going west of course, it goes to the ladder down to D, which I still use occasionally but now with the water-link I tend to use that now.

Many thanks for the info. I don't really know much about the chambers lying to the east of 8E, except
some mention that they have all experienced considerable falls and aren’t really recommended

Wonder what is was for, maybe trialing the Narrow/Stripy in that area? 200 yards of level represents about 130 man-days labour, plus muck-out work. Seems a bit of a waste of money to me!

Was there anything to see? Graffiti or anything?
