A friend of mine has asked me how much one half of a former coal mine head gear would be worth.

They want to put one in the middle of a village in Derbyshire (Westhouses) which had quite a coal mining industry up to a few decades ago. They want to commemorate this in some way.

Can anyone help please?

Assume you mean one of these, one dumped on a hillside in South Wales.

Edit: The image is from 2006, was still there in 2013 but does not appear on latest sat images.

Both halves were there in 2013.

Just guessing on this one, but I reckon about half what you’d pay for a complete one (less the cost of the bolts). And complete ones are about twice the price of the halves.

I suspect one half would equal one monument and command a higher premium as the complete wheel equals two monuments?Big Grin IP: 86.130.196.252

Maybe try Wakefield council, they have several in storage for future mining monuments. IP: 86.8.200.254

Just a thought!
I would have a basis of its weight in scrap iron as the basic bottom price!
As it has been worked Inam suggesting 50% over its scrap value!

Where in westhouses would it be placed? I live in Tibshelf, Pinxton has one, and blackwell, would be nice to see one in westhouses too. Not much to see there currently, most people don't even realise they've changed village when entering from blackwell Roll Eyes

I am not sure. It was known (by a neighbour of a friend) that I had an interest in such things so I was asked. I said I would try and find out.

I have seen the one in Blackwell, very nice.

Some at Caphouse also.

The mining pedant in me says that a memorial head gear wheel should be pretty much the same dimensions as the originals.

Although every time I've seen a half wheel used as a monument it's always the top half so probably harder to sell the bottom halves.....

The top halfs are always in better nick, cause the bottom is more prone to damp & rust.

I suppose the bottom 1/2 is weighed in and perhaps only the top 1/2 commands a premium. IP: 86.130.196.252

If you travel to old mining areas in Australia, you’ll see where the bottom halves go. It’s almost like they were sticking through...... IP: 31.185.47.152

For as long as the bearings are 'palm greased' by the unscrupulous.

I think you lot are stuck in a vicious circle, from which there is no escape, just ask Mr Kafka....., if there had been a manic cackle emoji I would have used it.
