This ‘apparent’ abandonment of the railway option, in my opinion is just a little shortsighted especially when you consider an enormous amount of Boulby’s production is moved by rail to Teesport! IP: 31.52.22.198

Whitby & tourism more generally is the long-term cash cow & employer in those parts, not a mining venture with a finite lifespan. Bringing huge freight trains into or close to Whitby or along the coast or the Esk Valley would never be a viable or desirable option?

Regardless of that though, I'd guess it would be hopelessly inefficient & unsuitable to a large scale venture. Even the two carriage Middlesbrough to Whitby Northern Rail service takes half a lifetime down the Esk Valley line. Couldn't guess how long a heavy freight train would take, even with massive line improvements?

There was no way on earth they would have got permission to build 'another Boulby' in the National Park.

It's no coincidence that the Lockwood service shaft is located in the first field in Redcar and Cleveland.

I would have thought that a continuous conveyor system would be operationally more straightforward than having to load and unload a batch on and off a train. IP: 185.19.209.50

I believe an idea for a pier from the minesite out to deep water was also floated but quickly discounted! Laugh IP: 212.1.206.18

The Hawsker spur was left intact after the Whitby/Scarborough line shut in 1966 just in case somebody chose to exploit the potash south of Whitby. Prescient if not really in quite the right place.

Given the current tunnel cost estimate of £600m (compared to £167m in 2016) I suspect RJV comment about the impact on tourism is more valid than just construction costs on the Esk Valley line and trans-shipment issues.

Of course it could be ICL playing a long game to push Sirius' cost base so high that they run out of cash/stop having a cost advantage Devil

Possibly not practical, even if securely covered, today's immortal and prosecution exempt children would soon find a way in, so they could ride the belt.

Am I right in thinking there is a narrow gauge railway in the tunnel next to the conveyor ?
I wonder if the owners would be up for the occasional special passenger train through it , if it were two foot gauge there are plenty of coaches that could be borrowed for such an occasion!

Sirius Minerals have suspended the sale of the $500m bond that was key to unlocking the $2.5bn revolving credit facility at the end of September.

Seems current cash reserves will last until the same time.

Various news sources on the net. Sorry for using $ figures, £ ones out of date too quickly Blink

It all seems to be converging towards Brexit Day. Good luck with that. I'm sure the financial sea will be nice and calm around that time. IP: 86.160.26.213
