I fear the average mine explore might need sexing up a bit to have a wide appeal, a couple of hours stumbling about on a bleak hillside in the drizzle then standing in waist deep water for a bit whilst someone stares intently at a bit of the wall which appears no different to the rest of the wall and mumbles through their beard about minerals, then describes in great detail how a particular bit of severely corroded metal was used by the old man, that later turns out to be a bit of muddy crust that fell off your sandwiches.

Glad to know I'm not the only one to have that experience. This has unfortunately reinforced my wife's opinion of mine explorers (with a few exceptions; you know who you are). Laugh

I think a feature program on me hanging on an SRT rope with nothing underneath me with water coming down on my head attempting to use a 24 volt hammer drill to secure a descending main would go down very well.

and if you are really interested it gets easier as I either own the mines through a trust I set up, or am a director of the company that maintains them and controls access.

Hopefully the more programs people see about mine exploring the less people will think we are 'reckless' idiots for going in them. IP: 86.144.205.101

agreed, but double edged in that the more people, including reckless idiots, will want to go in them.
Which in itself is double edged as the reckless idiots may learn better and help to increase the numbers of enthusiast. And we do need new younger people.

A balance in everything.

It's all about getting the right sort of people into the hobby, the amount of beer cans I have seen about in some of the mines suggests it's not always the right people in there. (theres beer cans in Moel Fferna sounds like a recipie for disaster.)

People have it drilled into them at a young age that mines are dangerous (as it should be.) But there seems to be an aura of 'if you go in there you will die' rather than if you take precautions it's no more dangerous than driving.

I would hope there is a mention of websites like this so people who do want a go can do it safely - preferably with a group of experienced explorers.

I think that anyone who appears on TV or film should dump the Bear Grylls attitude for a start, some his stuff is downright daft.

Basically demonstrating right attitudes and practices, emphasising proper equipment, and obviously showing respect for the underground environment. Its possible to provide entertainment, which is what film people are looking for, without some of the daftness we see.

To his credit, apart from the odd jovial comment, Will Millard did it rather well I thought. They were nice people to work with as well.
If I do get more TV work, I will try to be entertaining but at the same time put across the right message.

It really depends on what type of show they're looking at making. Unfortunately as shown by youtube content like 'LOST IN ABANDONED MINE' gets more views than general exploring videos or documentaries.

I did enjoy the underground segments on hidden wales, especially your part Roy Laugh

We had a message off this guy to our mine exploration page the other day. Would be an amasing experience to meet with a few of the other cave groups to maybe work on this project as a collaboration.
