The company's mine, based near Whitby has been named as 'Woodsmith Mine' after two of the project’s original geologists. This involved the unveiling of the new name plaque on Friday during a ceremony to mark the start of construction on site. Thumb Up

The sheer scale of this scheme seems to be dawning on people as construction work gets underway, well done to all involved in bringing the project to fruition and those involved in it's construction going forward, deep mining in the UK is far from dead!!Thumbs Up

Latest news not so good.

It was reported this week that after a reappraisal the estimated construction cost has risen by £463M, in part due to the 23 mile tunnel to Teesside needing to be wider and with a thicker lining, and to a longer lead-in time to full production.

Also there is doubt in some quarters as to the amount of the product which will be in demand. As a result the share price has dropped close on 20% knocking over £250M off the value of the company.

To be fair, the requirement for the 23 mile long tunnel is absolutely insane.

Sirius ‘s problems are compounded when you realise that there are potentially other K deposits, which also need development
.
Most of these are opencast which look a lot more attractive than working a mine over I mile deep!

I think we will see a diminution of the progress it’s this mine in the near future!
The U.K. Government have committed to agreeing to underwrite the loans this company needs and is said to be having second thoughts about the project.
As has been pointed out the tunnel that is to be driven is only a few miles shorter than the channel tunnel!

Does anyone know how thick the potash deposit is?
The siate says 2 shafts to be sunk 1600 metres (1 Mile) deep to access the deposit.
Going to be getting pretty warm down there.

I believe that Boulby is 35C at the cold end and 45C at the hot end.

The tmb was launched yesterday at Wilton to begin the 13 km drive to Lockwood Reservoir, and was named 'Stella Rose.'

Recent thoughts I have seen suggest that this impressive drive could still be stopped due to lack of
cash!
As I have said earlier whilst it is a worthwhile project, cash demands are going to be very high!
This tunnel would be longer than the Channel tunnel!

Yes it's completely retarded when you think there is a railway route which could be recommissioned.

All very well but wasnt their planning permission conditional on the whole project being below ground, not spoiling the lovely view Laugh

The railway route would need some mega engineering of its own, at least 2 massive viaducts and Loftus? and Staithes would need rebuilding , Larpool at Whitby is still there but I doubt its in good nick. Then there's two mega tunnels at Sandsend to deal with along with more viaducts there. :P
The other way to Scarborough would require a route up the fearsome 1:35 to Ravenscar and then you'll have to bulldoze through most of Scarborough to connect to the network!

Cheers

Sirius say they considered all the options including doubling the railway from Ruswarp to Middlesbrough via Battersby then decided on a pipeline from Ruswarp to Teesside.

A rethink after planning problems came down on the present scheme of a 5m diameter tunnel containing a conveyor.

Thoughts of reopening the railways from Whitby to Scarborough or Boulby were apparently soon discounted.
