We are planning a lads day out, "works do" some ex miners to Nenthead. Does anyone know a good (very) safe route for about 30 minutes to go inbye and 30 minutes out? Some of us don't want (or need anything adventurous) Are the adits open so to speak I have seen videos of gates being lifted up? Which would be the best / easiest adit to go to. The museum / guide shop is closed but it looks like there is a lot to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as we a travelling a long way and I will get a dogs life if we don't get to go underground as we have been to Apedale Colliery already and everyone was impressed with that.

If you're only wanting to go for an hour then Smallcleugh is probably your best bet.

The entrance position given on the satellite map here is spot on and the path goes right to it.

This plan will do you

https://www.aditnow.co.uk/documents/Smallcleugh-Lead-Mine/Smallcleugh-Plan-Martin-Critchley.pdf

Go in Smallcleugh Level, easy walk in under welly deep
water to first junction, straight on at junction, one little crawl at the bottom of a slippy slope, then dry walking along Hard-Cross Cut

You'll pass one fenced off shaft just before the junction and one walled off one just after it.

Once you intersect the flats (up that big hole) there will be plenty in the immediate area to keep you amused for 1hr.

Back out the way you came in, down to the Miners Arms, job done.

If you can come on Wednesday 6th December, we can provide a trip into Carrs Level. All easy walking, except for three companionway ladders to climb.

Thanks Chris, that sounds do-able, we might have to miss the short crawly though as two of our number have bionic hips (although young-ish, years of abuse methinks). The Miners Arms is defo on the list.

Thumbs Up

Hi Pete, would love to do that but two of our number have bionic hips and all of us are working in the week, so can only do Saturday. But if we can keep in touch we will arrange something in new year.
Cheers
Thumbs Up

Hi Chris, as for the "one little crawl at the bottom of a slippy slope" how long and how steep is the "slippy slope". How long and how low is the "little crawl"? Would we need waterproof trousers for example? IP: 95.144.153.236

Never seen any smoke/mist there.

I've bumped into all sort of weirdos near the Ballroom.
Could have been smoking weed or setting fire to rubbish.

Hi
On Sunday we removed amongst other things, 98 spent T Lights and a large spent firework! from the Ballroom.

One would have hoped that those partying, in the Ballroom could at least remove the rubbish they had left there!
Well done to those people who cleared up after them.
