It must be over 50 years since I last did this and it don't look as muddy as I remember. That was one reason we never went back. I remember trying to find the barking dog but never found it as at that time it was still active. It looks as though a return trip is well overdue.Thumbs Up IP: 88.145.128.58

one of my favorite local underground trips. Drop down the hole just inside the large cave and exit out the corregated tunnel :D very intense for the amateur so I always take the noobs down there along with masson after, muddy, wet slide to the bottom with a stop off in what I call the bat cave, then proceed to the bottom, takes about an hour through trip with a little rest halfway Smile always wondered about the lower workings, but not really a fan of all that rotting timber supporting it Laugh

One of my first trips, with friends, while I was still at school. Not much had changed when I returned almost thirty years later, though the sump looked very different. Still a place of mystery, intrigue and potential. Back in the 1960s I was told that out of work miners from the closing of Millclose mine went prospecting in Jugholes and emerged on the Via Gellia (from the level by the road intersected by a quarry). Whether this was one, long underground trip, a reference to prospecting over that entire area or a story keep cavers busy and out of the way (it came from working miners) I do not know. Other stories, from reliable sources - Jugholes connects, or did with Oxclose mine, there are large caverns accessed from the bottom of Hut shaft, there was a Jugholes sough, there is another entrance to Jugholes, apart from the well known ones. Like many places in the Matlock area with stories of connections, sometimes dismissed as impossible, recent research and some "pushing" has been productive, in terms of validating the stories and making discoveries. now you've set my advernturer mode off again is anything mentioned about connections in the jugs interpretation pack? Does anybody have a digital copy of the pack that I could look at? I've been meaning to visit buxton caving supplies for the last couple of months to stock up on surveys etc but just haven't had chance yet.

There were early Op Mole records among part of Doug Nash's collection that the British Caving Library transferred to PDMHS last year. UNfortunately, they won't be available for study until they've been sorted and catalogued and I don't know how far on that process is at present.

AR,thanks for that,i know Doug did a lot down there as well as others, this could well be what we need. As i mentioned in previous posts, jug holes does link to other mines. We certainly are not anywhere near oxclose ,but ,we have linked into two seperate systems from noon nick/jug holes system.

Thinking on, there might be relevant stuff in the late Margaret "Sougher" Howard's records as she was in Op Mole back then. Her papers were deposited in the DRO so are available for study.
