Hi there, I have found a reference to a mine on my farm at Stancombe, Liverton, Devon. I know the shaft is in my neighbours field, but I think there may be a adit on my land and would like to generally know more about the history. any help be appreciated. IP: 92.233.35.243

Is it possible you could provide a map position for the shaft in the field?

There's a shaft marked here near Liverton, anywhere near the location?

The shaft on old mapping at Liverton is also within 400 metres of a place named Stancombe. IP: 86.182.98.25

yes thats the shaft I have seen marked on a map, mine is the barn below. I have seen reference to a adit where the spring comes out (drain) what is in the gulley above my barn. IP: 92.233.35.243

Early mapping does not show the spring but the shaft is on most maps. The spring first appears on mapping around the 1950s. Elevation data indicates the spring is around 50 metres lower than the shaft.

Do you have any details of the conjectured adit?

Edit:You could try wading through this lot.

Hi,I live up the road at Green lane,Ilsington. I have done a fair bit of research on the area and Stancombe was a small manganese mine. We also have a small manganese trial on the farm which started in Brimley orchard, filled in the 70s.
Happy to have a look if you want? I'm sure you will know my landlord if you farm locally. Send me a PM if interested,
Thanks Tony.

Hello - The Brooke Index of Devon is now I believe held at the Records Office at Sowton. I copied out all the Dartmoor parishes when it was held at the West Country Studies Library in the centre of Exeter. Also if aging memory still serves... it has 5 or 6 binders filled with typed notes, reference etc all from the Mining Journal. Back then photocopying wasn't permitted so I visited Justin in Marazion and acquired his written permission to photograph the pages and then transcribe them.

Not as big as Cornwall's Index, however, still a huge task to transcribe it all... good luck in your quest... regards TM

Cheers. I hope DRO are as accommodating as CRO when it comes to copying things for personal use. I'll make a point of asking if I can copy it when I go back up there for a couple of odd manor maps. IP: 196.52.32.7
