If you Google Op Orph you'll find a lot more info, Rick - both about Greenside and the Kit Hill work.

Already done. I found the Grey Gold material reproduced on the Sub Brit website and was looking to tidy my referencing. From my point of view the interesting stuff is the AWRE activities at Excelsior Tunnel, the Greenside material places this in its wider context.

Interesting. I remember many years ago being told that nuclear weapons had been tested In Greenside and that it was best avoided. Now I understand! We still went in - a good jaunt. Roll Eyes IP: 209.93.175.136

Sounds familiar; back in the 90s I was told that nuclear weapons had been tested in Excelsior

As Ian Tyler, makes perfectly clear no Atomic Weapons, were ever tested at Greenside.
P119- 120 of his book Greenside Mine and the mines of the ullswater Valley.
He also clearly explains here what operation Orpheus was about.

I must admit I am not convinced that anything was tested in Excelsior.

There are several uncompleted blast spheres, suggesting that work at Excelsior may have been abandoned before completion. The spheres that were completed do not appear to have any obvious surface fracturing which would be indicative that a charge had been fired inside one.

I think that the story of nuclear weapons being tested underground in either Excelsior or Greenside may come from the same shop as the steam locomotives in storage under Box Hill, John Taylor was a Cornishman, you can underground under Snowdon and come out the other side, Penrhyngerwin goes under the sea for miles, and possibly a lot more silly stuff.

You mean that the British Strategic Steam Reserve doesn't exist? You'll be telling us next that there's no such person as Father Christmas. Sad

Ah well, there's always the pile of Harley Davidsons down the mine shaft in the Midlands to look forward to ...

When I worked at GRL there was a persistent story about crated Harley Davidsons being buried in the grounds. There had been troops stationed there during the war but the only visible remains were the two water towers that we used for quite a while after moving onto the site.

When new building works started there was an archaeological investigation of quite a bit of the site. No motorcycles turned up but they did find a Saxon village and graveyard Smile

Hi,
When I was six years old, I remember one day when our family all hid in the cupboard under the stairs, because of a leak that there was to be 'atomic testing' in the Excelsior tunnel, (visible some miles away from our home)... My father reported having seen 'ball lightning' coming along the valley, but it turned out to be due to a summer storm!
Quite scary, but possibly all due to rumours. There could have been some sort of testing of radioactivity, but there was no sign of any nuclear explosion... Kit Hill is just too small for that to be really feasable!

My favourite myth is the load of Merlin engines which were greased up, crated and buried at Castle Bromwich aerodrome just after WW 2. Later a housing development was built over the site. Load of nonsense but who knows what might be hidden in these legends? IP: 209.93.175.136

Your all missing the Nazi train full of gold bars which could be very easily transported in the brand new Spitfires all crated and buried somewhere else.

There was never any intention to do any form of radioactive testing either at Excelsior or Greenside. The purpose of operation Orpheus was to test whether the the "signature" of an explosion could be altered / concealed by firing in a void (Latter decoupling theory). The tests were carried out using conventional explosives.

Theres usually a shred of truth in all urban legends.

After all, would an urban legend be legendary if it was boring sounding? Laugh
