Does anyone have info about an open shaft at SJ058799? It's at the top of a bank on the east side of the railway formation and has a section of iron fence protecting it on its west (railway) side.

In particular, does it lead to anything interesting?

I don't think so, the one I'm interested is to the south of Allt y Graig, though I would imagine it's part of the same sett as the above mentioned Talargoch Maesyrerwddu (the grid reference of which is on the north side of Allt y Graig).

Thanks for those links, especially the Ffordd Penrhwylta Water Main archaeological assessment which I'd not seen before.

Unfortunately, the shaft I'm interested is just south of the area covered in those reports.

The NGR in your initial post is close to Thorburn's NGR for Dyserth Mine (SJ 057/795), the history of which he summarised in half a dozen lines on p.63 of BM 31. If you lack this vol, I'll transcribe these few lines for you. IP: 151.227.148.171
