How can you rate 3 as 'should have been first' and then state that you don't like silhouettes?
If you are going to make any constructive comments, get it right will you

Tony is clearly a complete wind-up merchant.

It's the same on UK Caving (I only went on once I promise!)

I take everything he writes with a gritter size pinch of salt!

Thumbs Up

and more importantly, I thought all the photos were awesome.

congratulations to all who won prizes.

Curiously, there seem to be some trends in underground photography - both in the calendar submissions and the competition entries, it's noticeable that there seem to be some styles that are 'in fashion' and some that we don't see as much of as before.

In a way, it's quite refreshing to have the variety, because it stops things looking the same every year.

A little aside on the judging: this was a collaborative effort between the five site admins and nobody got a casting vote - this, I think, makes the result pretty fair as it removes the possibility that any one judge's opinions are out of kilter with the general opinion.

As long as its a nice photo and people like to look at it then none of the above matters. Put yer money where yer mouth is mister and show us one of your blinding pics that conform to what you reckon makes a good pic Tongue

Would you care to elaborate Sir?

I am aware of the fact of nearly all underground photography being on a wide angle setting, I think its rare to see anything taken at more than a 35mm focal length or digital equivalent.

Difficult one really: I think there may be a current trend is for a bit more backlighting, with associated silhouettes.

I think we're also seeing a bit more creative use of lighting now that people are generally happy with digital photography in the dark and as lighting power improves.

Certainly, I can do things that I couldn't do two years ago, be it lighting larger chambers or illuminating underwater.

This is also rather useful in that the increased availability of higher-powered lights has raised overall quality of photography, which will prove a useful record of the present for the future.

The people issue may be because use of more powerful lights enables shots to be taken more quickly - and this means people don't get bored being asked to stand still for 10 minutes whilst a chamber is illuminated by a Maglite!

My sense of honour obligates me to post about the fact that I today received my prize of the Fenix TK11, the very next day after winning it in a competition!
The speed of dispatch speaks volumes for the standard of service of ABC Powermarine. The torch itself is a beautifully engineered marvel.
Credit where it’s due.
