2nd Prize

The AditNow 2008 Photography Competition

The AditNow 2008 Photography Competition

Introduction

We are pleased to announce the 2008 AditNow Photography Competition, with a first prize of a StenLight S7 Headlamp, sponsored by Excellent Stuff and a second prize of a Fenix TK10 Flashlight and charger/batteries worth £67.94 sponsored by ABC Powermarine of north Wales.

The Mike Moore prize of £40 worth of mining books has been donated by Moore Books. Full details of prizes are on the right hand side of this page.

The competition is for photographs of underground mine workings to be entered by uploading them to www.aditnow.co.uk. The theme for the 2008 competition is 'Lighting the dark'.

Subject Matter

Please take note of the following information on subject matter:

(a) The theme for the 2008 competition is 'Lighting the dark'

(b) Photographs should be of man-made remains of underground mining, this may include workings open to daylight, but not opencast pits or quarries

(c) Suitable subject matter may include absolutely any aspect of underground workings, past or present

(d) Particular attention should be paid to the careful and appropriate use of light in your photograph(s), either natural or artificial

(e) You may enter up to three photographs, all of which must be underground, but you will be judged on the best of your three

(f) Photographs should depict abandoned workings and not sites which are currently being worked unless permission had been specifically granted for access

(g) Images exhibiting excessive digital enhancement will be disqualified.

How to Enter

Entry is open to all, and is free:

(a) If you are not a registered user, you will need to register before you can upload images - this can be done via the 'Register' link under 'My AditNow.co.uk' on the left hand side of the page

(b) Images should be uploaded as a JPEG file to the User Album of the relevant mine or quarry and should be between 1200x800 and 1600x1200 pixels

(c) Mines may be found by using the search tools under 'Find a Mine' on the left hand side of the page: if the mine is not listed, please simply add it to the database

(d) When you upload an image, please add a description, so that other entrants and the judges know what your photograph is of

(e) Once you have uploaded your images, please create a new topic in the The 2008 AditNow Photography Competition forum entitled 'Competition Entry - username' and embed your three images in the post - the code to do this can be copied and pasted from the individual photograph's page, under 'Link to photograph'

Competition Rules

1. General

(a) The opening date for submission of photographs is 00:00 on Monday 1st September 2008
(b) The closing date for submission of photographs is 23.59 on Sunday 30th November 2008
(c) All entries must be uploaded to www.aditnow.co.uk and showcased in a post in the relevant forum
(d) You may enter up to three photographs
(e) You may change any or all of your three photographs up to the closing date, posts will be locked after the closing date.

4. Copyright

(a) Copyright of the image will rest with the photographer
(b) Photographs may only be uploaded by the copyright holder
(c) AditNow will display the photographs via its usual web delivery service and will make no further use of them without the copyright holder's permission
(d) Photographs displayed at high resolution will be watermarked with the copyright holder's username.

5. Judging

(a) Entries will be judged by administrators of AditNow
(b) Photographs will be judged on photographic merit, subject matter and relevance
(c) The top three photographs will be announced within 7 days of the close of the competition
(d) The judges' decision will be final and a copy of the original, unprocessed image may be requested
(e) The prizes will be dispatched to the winners within 14 days of the result being announced or in the case of the books prize once titles have been selected.

6. Miscellaneous

(a) This competition is not open to anybody directly connected with AditNow (including AditNow site administrators), Excellent Stuff or ABC Powermarine
(b) AditNow reserves the right to modify these rules for reasons of clarification without notice and with immediate effect.

Note we advise all participants to ensure that they have legal access to the sites they are photographing and that they remain in safe areas at all times. AditNow will not be held liable for any loss caused in taking photographs in order to enter this competition.
