The ore was placed in the hole and mercury added. The rock next to it with the holes in would have been used to grind the ore, power being supplied by a water wheel. The mercury would have absorbed the gold into itself and at the end of the process the amalgam would have been recovered and the gold extracted. Wales. We found many derelict buildings and machinery. Also, for your interest although you may already know, there is a small garden near the foot of the mine that has been recently created. It has a sort of oriental feel and was interesting to walk around. There was a strange looking cairn as well which I have not uploaded as it is not a competition photo but which I will send if you like. It was erected in 1969 on the New Cooks Kitchen Vertical Shaft which was sunk in 1907. It was used mainly for lifting machinery. There used to be another headframe, since dismantled for handling the ore. The ore was intially processed at the 386fm level, brought to the surface and via conical buckets, transfered to the conveyor (seen on the left) and then to the ore bins.
