this large copper mine west of cardon hill and just the other side of the river Seaton of the first and most profitable mine in the district south Caradon which it equaled and even surpassed in production in its first decade, started in 1839 the site expanded rapidly with 553 in employed on site by 1845, this thriving copper mine has much in the way of surface relics, the remains of the pumping engine house and adjacent boiler house at Elliot’s shaft and count house (now a private dwelling and part of downhill farm) are the most noticeable but remains of the stamps, smithy, winding house and network of leats and pond are also evident.
the mine closed in 1874 having produced 85,000 tons of raw copper ores
