Description by ICLOK
Sunk 1902 and closed 1968, Wingfield Manor Colliery (or "Oaky" as it was known locally becasue of its proximity to Oakerthorpe) was sunk in 1902 by the Wingfield Manor Colliery Co. It was purchased in 1920 by the Clay Cross Co. for only £5,000. It was one of a few mines to work the Kilburn seam and in 1939 a new decline/drift was driven in order to work the Low Main and Blackshale seams. It was one of the first mines to have pithead baths (installed in 1932) and during the peak of its production in the early 1950's its output was approx 300,000 to 400,000 tonnes per year during which time the workforce was around 600 men. It merged with Swanwick Colliery in 1963 before ceasing production in January 1964, final closure coming in 1968. Today there are few signs of the mine of ever having existed, all buildings have gone and the massive slag heap has been landscaped and wooded and is now part of of Shaw Wood.
On the other side of the road to the East, it is possible to follow the route of the mines railway to Oakerthorpe pumping station about 0.3 miles away. The track bed turn right and crossed the stream and the bridge abutments to the South of the stream can be seen. The site of the pumping station can be got to with huge difficulty, a recent exploration revealed huge stone blocks from the demolished buildings, the flue to the chimney, anchor points for the headgear and an obvious shaft mound and earthworks. The shaft I believe to have only been buried. There has been a conical subsidence which has revealed large timbers thrown over the circular brick lined shaft (Probably headgear timbers), some brick work being visible. I would suggest not standing in the hole!!!
