Thorngreen Limestone Quarry (United Kingdom)
Recently (2007) closed and landscaped quarry in the Carboniferous Great Limestone near Allenheads. The last operator was Alan Davison Construction who worked it intermittantly for roadstone. In the 1850's it was the site of experiments by Captain Beaumont in shaft sinking by using a diamond tipped cutting apparatus that cut a circular hole about a yard in diameter. The experiments were not a great success but the Captian went on to patent a machine for drilling bore holes that was far more practical for the time.
