Swinhope Lead Mine (United Kingdom)

Swinhope Mine was worked as a Lead mine by the Beaumont Co between 1815-1872 and worked the Williams Vein, which is the continuation of Barneycraig Vein. The mine eventually connected to the Barneycraig workings.
The first working was from a Whimsey Shaft at Swinhopehead (NY 825 4637) which was later connected to the main working level, the Horse Level (NY 8315 4712). This was a crosscut adit reaching the vein at 130 metres from the portal.
The eastern portion of the vein proved barren but further towards West Allen a very productive section was worked in the Great Limestone with small flats either side of the vein.
Crosscuts at Swinhopehead found the North Vein but this was richer in zinc than lead so was little worked until the Veille Montangne Zinc Co took over the mine in 1896 and some stoping was done.
The Mine was reopened in 1951 by Durham Chemicals Ltd with the ore produced being shipped to Birtley for processing but a lack of on site processing made it uneconomic to continue.
In 1955 Consolidated Gold Fields Ltd took over the mine . They sank a dib (NY 8249 4651) from Swinhope Head to connect with the crosscut between Williams and North Vein at the Horse Level horizon and drove a prospecting crosscut over 2 kilometres to test the virgin ground between the Barneycraig- Williams Vein / Allenheads / and the Killhope veins.. This venture was a disappointment and no major new veins were located.
In 1960 a joint venture between the Owners of Settlingstones Mine Ltd. And the Weardale Lead Co took on the mine but little work was done and it soon closed.
