Springwell Coal Mine (United Kingdom)

The colliery was commenced sinking in May 1821 by the partnership of colliery owners of the families Ord, Wortley, Liddle and Bowes known locally as 'The Grand Allies'.
The Allies operated many pits in the Durham and Northumberland coalfield. The sinking was completed in February 1824.
From Springwell a self acting incline ran 1 1/4 milesdown to Leam Lane from where a railway and another incline linked the pit to Springwell Staithes on the Tyne at [NZ 330658]

In 1940 the colliery was sold to The Washington Coal Co Ltd for ventilation purposes.
