Saltom Pit Coal Colliery (United Kingdom)
This mine was started in 1729 and took 3 years to sink the shaft. The mine operated from1729 until 1848.
Being so close to the sea the shaft is only 6m above sea level. The shaft reached 146m in depth with the furthest coal face worked some 2km from the shaft under the sea!
The engine house still to be found in reasonable condition contained a Crowther Type steam winding engine. Of particular interest is the retaining wall of heavy stone construction which kept the sea at bay and provided a secure stable base on which to collar the shaft, even so in a good storm this must have been an interesting place to work to say the least!
