Norchard Colliery Coal Mine (United Kingdom)

Norchard Colliery became the main base of the Dean Forest Railway after closure as a working mine. As such there is little to see of a mining nature now but it is worth a visit if you are a steam railway fan. There are a few noteworthy items on the site however. One is a drainage adit near the entrance to the site that positively gushes. Norchard always had a reputation as a 'wet pit'. Other items of interest are good examples of 'L' shaped cast iron traimway rails as used in various Forest locations and the remains of a very early canal used to take coal to the Severn at Lydney before the railway was built.
The Norchard page on the DFR site is available here http://www.deanforestrailway.co.uk/station_norchard.html
