Long Fell Baryte Mine (United Kingdom)

Baryte workings on the slopes of Long Fell above Hilton. They were begun by Long Fell Barytes Co in 1914 who put in plant and an arial ropeway, they continued work until 1924. Both the plant and ropeway had been dismantled by the time W. Wharton took over operations in 1939 and that company put in a new roadway from Hilton. Bizarrely Long Fell became part of the target area for the Warcop Firing Ranges while the mine was still working and blast walls were erected in front of the main adit to protect it but by 1950 continued operation had become impossible and the mine closed.
