One of the collieries in the Forest of Dean operated by the Forest of Dean Freeminers. Hopewell is now run principally as a mining museum although very small tonnages are still removed from parts of the workings.
The Hopewell workings are very old and it is one of the mines that William Smith acted as consultant on in the early years of the 19th century. Smith was the inventor of the system of geological mapping now in common use and the 'father' of British geology.
