Gwaithcoch (Rheidol United) Lead Mine (United Kingdom)
The biggest mine for surface features of the five Rheidol United mines - Gwaithcoch, Nantglas, Alltddu, Erwtomau and Llwybrllwynog. The Rheidol United dressing floors, now mostly covered with earth extracted from the Nant y Moch hydro tunnel, contain two good ore-slides in one and a shallow wheel pit. Above this is the partly covered Gwaithcoch deep adit by the footpath. Further up the high tips is a ledge - the site of the former Gwaithcoch middle adit. Above, the Vale of Rheidol Railway crosses the tips and open stopes lay above at Gwaithcoch Uchaf. The mine is easy to aproach - it's in a field through which a public footpath passes from the footbridge at Rheidol Falls.
