Gawthwaite High Slate Mine (United Kingdom)

An interesting slate quarry/mine on Kirkby Moor. The main pit appears to have been a closehead, opened to daylight to form the present quarry, though underground working probably stopped in about 1860. A number of other trial levels, some sucessful were also driven in the area, thought these are now completely blocked. Remains of several riving sheds are still in place, as are one or two bits of old rail.
