Flinty (Flinty Fell) Sandstone Quarry (United Kingdom)

Sandstone quarry where the sandstone used in the many miles of stone arched levels in the Nenthead mines was obtained. While limestone deads were usually used for the upright parts of the level walls a more regular shape was needed to make strong arches for the roof so sandstone was quarried for the job and taken underground.
The quarry is now worked by Alston Natural Stone Ltd. (Formerly Hodgson Brothers) and they make a variety of riven and sawn products from it at their workshop near Alston.
