Wheal Emma and Brookwood (South Devon United) Mixed Mine (United Kingdom)

Parish; Egloskerry

Description by ICLOK
Worked for Arsenic, Copper, Fluorite

The sett of this mine incorporates East Brookwood mine, New brookwood mine and Wheal Emma. The group has been worked under the name South Devon United Copper Mine. Workings extend down some 151 Fathoms deep. The site lies in the grounds of Brook Manor 1.5 miles NW of Buckfastleigh and has substantial remains including several wheelpits, large burrows and 2 engine houses, the better one being a pumping engine house (pump rod still in shaft) which once housed a 50" engine (built 1868). The other engine house though largely collapsed is thought to have been a whim.
Recorded outputs are 1861-77 21140T of 7% Copper ore & 247T of Pyrites. As Sth Devon Utd mine returns were 1880-5 8190T of 5.75% Copper ore & in 1882 84T of Mispickel.
Newbrook Wood and East Brookwood mines do not seem to have contributed very much. New brookwood apparently opening during the 1880's when the sett was working as Sth Devon Utd.
