Downshay Marble Quarry (United Kingdom)
In c. 1542 Leland tells us that 'all the marble in the new fabric of Salisbury Cathedral was supplied for 12 years by Alice Bruer.' , who was the owner of Downshay Manor at Worth Matravers in the Isle of Purbeck and the traces of the quarried areas on the Purbeck Marble outcrop at Downshay can still be seen today.
