Burtree Pasture Lead Mine (United Kingdom)

Originally a lead mine and the most productive mine in Weardale for that mineral producing around 175000 tons of concentrates. Fluorite was the principle gangue mineral and the mine was reopened in the 1970's for spar. Foraky Ltd were contracted to reopen an underground shaft to access the deeper levels but this was beset by problems and it was never fully refurbished. The horse level portal is collapsed but the mine can be accessed via a shaft used as the second exit. The 1970's winding gear is all still in situ underground alongside a magnificent 'old mans' whim chamber.
