Bryn-yr-Afr (Brynyrafr) Mixed Mine (United Kingdom)
This mine is very conspicuous by its large spoil tips on the far shore of the Nant-y-Moch reservoir. Worked from about 1879 up to 1914, a massive ore body was extracted of which a large stope fifteen feet wide by about a hundred feet high remains today above water level. The deep adit of the mine is somewhere under the lake, as are many of the wheel pits etc associated with this working.
An wet adit over to the north, is a blind heading. There is an adit opposite the mine in the forest by the side of the road named the "Newmarch Level". This was named after Henry Newmarch, who acted as consultant or manager in the last days of working, and was driven in an attempt to locate the Hafan Lode.
In this, it was successful, however the lode was found to be barren and venture came to nothing.
Newmarch himself died suddenly in 1910 age 62, his grave is in the ‘new’ cemetery at Talybont.
He left a widow, Clara, who continued to live in the old Talybont Mine managers house at y Wern at Talybont, and was remembered as a nice old lady who used to give sewing lessons.
