Broom Park Colliery Coal Mine (United Kingdom)

This mine was located barely 2 miles West of Durham City and was sunk around 1870 by the North Brancepeth Colliery Company. There appears to have been little production for the next 20 years but by the 1890s it was at it's height. In 1904 however there was a disasterous fire in the screens which virtually destroyed everything on the surface and the men underground had to make their escape through an old drift. The mine never reopened and the site was used as a coal storage depot until the 1980s and has now been landscaped for use as a picnic area.
