Brandy Bottle Incline Lead Mine (United Kingdom)

The Brandy Bottle Inclines are steeply sloping shafts, two side by side, driven soon after 1814 and about 100 fathoms long down the slope. At the vein intersection main levels are driven East and West and crosscuts join up with the Old Rake and Friarfold network. Half way down the incline a level takes off to the East and joins into the Surrender Mine a mile to the East which in turn joins with the Moulds Mine in Arkengarthdale. It was thus possible at one time to enter by sir Francis level in Gunnerside Gill and to travel through the underground workings through Sir George, Bunton, Hard Level, Brandy Bottle, Surrender and Moulds Mines, coming to daylight through the Moulds Level in Arkengarthdale.
