Brandy Bottle Incline Lead Mine (United Kingdom)
The Brandy Bottle Inclines are a pair of steeply sloping shafts about 100 fathoms long down the slope with an average inclination of 20 degrees. Work was started around 1815 by Frederick Hall with the intention of using a steam engine to haul the ore to surface up the inclines. At the vein intersection main levels are driven East and West and crosscuts join up with the Old Rake and Friarfold network. Half way down the incline a level takes off to the East and joins into the Surrender Mine a mile to the East which in turn joins with the Moulds Mine in Arkengarthdale. It was thus possible at one time to enter by sir Francis level in Gunnerside Gill and to travel through the underground workings through Sir George, Bunton, Hard Level, Brandy Bottle, Surrender and Moulds Mines, coming to daylight through the Moulds Level in Arkengarthdale.
