Full Review
A discussion of backup, backup, backup lights lead to a review of dirt-cheap glowsticks bought from eBay.
These glowsticks were bought from an eBay seller [link]. Cost £17.99+£10 P&P, or 28p each all-in per stick.
A fraction of the price of outdoor or camping shops.
A great big box of glowsticks:

What's in the box?

What did you expect?

But look, individually wrapped. And with wrist straps!
And in all sorts of colours:

Red, and orange, and yellow and green, and, er, blue.
And not only that, but bi-lingual French/English instructions too.
Baton lumineux indeed - mais oui!
That aside, they are only glowsticks, but are they any use?
Give them a snap and a good shake, and slowly the light level increases. The colours seemed to vary a little in their light output; darker colours not giving as much light as yellow which performed the best.
Could you escape a mine by the light of one? At a push, yes, although possibly on your hands and knees. And if you really want to live, remember to pack only yellow...
Of course they have other uses, temporary markers to avoid getting lost (if you go in for that sort of thing) or to prove or disprove connections. Although if used for these purposes please do take them out of the mine afterwards.
At 28p you really can't complain. A few in the bottom of your bag would provide some emergency lighting (albeit lighting for a dire and quite possibly final emergency) or a handy marker.
Immediately after snapping:

From left to right... red (pink surely), orange, blue, green and yellow.
8 hours later:

Note red (pink) and blue frozen and re-energised; yellow not doing so well, green storming along!
And if all that isn't enough the packaging is covered in inspirational and nonsensical English.
"Let's go to happy" - well why not?
Longevity - 8 hours on and still going strong. Of the unfrozen trio (orange, yellow and green) the green is closest to original light level with yellow (originally the brightest) having dimmed the most.
Freezing them - works! They go out as soon as they freeze and a few seconds in the microwave to defrost re-energises them.
The other urban myth - I have no intention whatsoever of drinking the two chemicals and reporting back on that one...
