Markham Colliery Mining Disaster - Walking Together
On the 27th April, Netherthorpe School in Staveley are holding an open day to celebrate the life of a miner. This is part of the "Walking Together" project, which commemorates the various mining disasters at Markham Colliery.
The Walking Together project will see a group of miners figures stretching from Duckmanton to Markham Vale (site of the former Markham colliery), each one having a miners tag which will tell a story about life as a miner. On this free to attend day, we hope to interview, talk and capture the stories of the miners so that we can put the stories onto the tags on each of the miner's fgures. These stories will be a part of history and help future generations to understand what it was like to be a miner, a miner's wife or living in a mining community. If your family was involved in the mining industry or lived in a mining community and you have a story to tell, we would like to invite you to Netherthorpe School, Ralph Road, Staveley, Derbyshire S43 3PU from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Attendance at the event will automatically enter you into a raffle which will be darwn at 2:30pm. If you have any artefacts that you would like to bring along on the day then please do so as the stdents would like to photograph the artefacts.
