Thanks for any help you can provide I also want to know if its safe for me to explore there as I'm new to all this and as I noticed some mines are big no no to explore and I don't want this to be 1 of them.

Thanks Breeze

No idea where the first two pics are taken, but the last 2 images are from a slate mine outside Blaneau Ffestiniog-def a no-go as the owners are currently un-topping the mine by virtue of large amounts of explosives and heavy plant... A very much active site where you wouldn't be popular if caught...

Hi Breeze

The first one is the Stwlan dam above Blaenau Ffestiniog. Owned by First Hydro. To the top right of the photo the tips of Moelwyn slate mine are visible. I think this one is all grilled and gated. A walker died in there a good number of years ago.

The mountain on the left is Moelwyn Bach, the mountain on the right is Moelwyn Mawr. You can see a packhorse track on the bank of Moelwyn Bach in that photo. Beyond the coll between the two mountains is a tramway leading to the Pant Mawr and Fron Boeth slate mines, and the Fron Boeth tunnel. All good stuff Smile

The second photo I have no idea but I guess it's some sort of culvert / access for the supply to the powerstation. If you're into drains stick to storm drains unless you want to find yourself generating the power to boil somebody's kettle in Blaenau Laugh

The last two are a Blaenau mine, as J says, on private land.

There are plenty of accessible slate mines within that area; Cwmorthin, Rhosydd, Croesor (small explore unless using SRT / boats), Wrysgan, Conglog, Fron Boeth, Pant Mawr etc. etc.

Top right of home page (and this page) you will see various search options. One is "OS Landranger sheet" with a drop down for the two letter codes for each OS grid area. Find out what (large) grid square you are in and use the drop down to show mines within that large grid square.

Note - if you are near to the edge of one large grid square you will have to look at the adjacent area too.

Lists mines by sheet on an OS map, e.g. everything on the SH sheet:

http://www.aditnow.co.uk/mines-quarries-os-landranger/SH/

Click on a mine name to go to its home page and you'll find all the albums and a Google map.

Would you include Bell Pits in the shallow coalfields in your definition of a mine?

I would imagine whatever square(s) cover Halkyn/Eclusham (SJ?) would be fairly high up any list.
