thought I'd do the decent thing and say howdy doody. have often had a poke around this site over the last few years, but only just registered

I'm lucky enough to live in the north pennines (rookhope) and have half a dozen mines literally within a few minutes walk of my front door - quite a few look unexplored too, but not ventured underground much since my pot holing days as a callow youth in the yorkshire dales. My lad is of an age where he's getting interested and wants to have a look underground too,

dunno if there's anyone else in the durham dales fancies a couple of newbies (ish) tagging along...

for what its worth I've las been a climber since I was about 11 so do know one end of a rope from another and a sticht plate from a rappel rack!!

We're probably going to have a relatively easy non-SRT potter about in Nenthead (probably Rampgill) after the meeting at the Heritage Centre this Sunday.

http://www.aditnow.co.uk/community/viewtopic.aspx?t=6784#msg96820

Thats 11am-1pm, so if you're around at 1pm we could do that ?

Never really spent much time in the Rookhope area, so some local pointers would be nice.

1pm sounds grand, my lad will be keen as mustard no doubt

sunday is our one day off a week so a mandatory lie in precludes me getting to the meeting!!, though I do have a couple of things I can chuck in to the mix - been meaning to message those in driving seat as it were

rookhope... second only to Nent for holes in the ground! there's quite a few I've been curious about

What the locals refer to as West level (up and to the right of the main boltsburn shaft), rumour has it allows a wander through and back out via fullwood (?) up by Burnside. most intriguing one of all is one thats yards from where we live. the level is not on any maps, and because of where its is, is totally invisible unless you are in front of it. the level is pretty good and seems dry too - well as far as I've been anyway. someone told me it had been dug from the inside out as there's no deads to be seen anywhere!

Maybe we'll have to have a look there with you another day.

Hi ebgb,
Good to have you on the site- not enough locals contribute.
Sorry to disappoint you about West Boltsburn, unless it has changed!
Was in there 20years ago went to an ironstone flat with no way out.
Locals told us originally went a long way but the way on was deliberately blocked to stop youngsters getting into difficulties.
I would certainly recommend you trying to join Chris in Rampgill if possible as it is a good experience and you will not see it all in one visit,

tried to reply to a couple of PM's but'll not let me!

anyhoo -

chris: sunday, yes indeed, wet and filthy is fine by me - being the big old softie I've turned into I may take the neoprene chesties route! Need to try get in to town to try beg/borrow/buy a couple of helmets.... (the bairn is 13 BTW) harness/hardware etc I found, no idea where the rest of my gear is lurking, possibly in the shed, but there's a thrush sat on a nest atop the pile that the rest of it is probably in so not going kick her off!

gavin: yup thats the fella!

dunno what the plan is for sundays meeting or what is hoped to be achieved, but if you need web hosting/dedicated server/domain names/ arty farty creative stuff... be glad to oblige

Are you doing it via the website ?
You can't reply to the one that arrives in your usual email inbox.

Some of the guys wear might waders in Rampgill to stay totally dry, I just wear normal wellies and caving oversuit/undersuit and expect to get wet.

I've got plenty of spare hard-hats (but only one spare light I would trust all day)

I have activated PM access for you now ebgb. It's a by request feature - that's how we keep your inbox free of offers of viagra, russian brides and chinese shoes...

Hi ebgb
Good to meet you and the lad last week, hope you enjoyed Rampgill. I'm based just over the hill in Daddry and up for underground trip anytime. Smile
