Indeed ....
there are plenty of abandoned shafts to be seen in the woodland behind the site of the engine and beyond ....and the remains of the steel works nearby.

Thanks! I shall have to gird my loins and venture thereabouts; to be sure it is worthy of me scribbling a magazine article !!

Is there any published material available on the FAIRBOTTOM COAL MINE and its long-removed iconic Newcomen engine " FAIRBOTTOM BOBS " ?

Any information would be most welcome.

Alan.

I've had a quick look at the Newcomen Soc archives and it may have been mentioned in a 1955 paper on the problems of preserving historic machinery, while there was a 2004 paper in the Industrial Archaeology Review about the excavation of the site: http://www.ingentaconnect.com/search/article?option1=tka&value1=fairbottom&pageSize=10&index=1

There's possibly another 1780s Newcomen engine still in-situ, but it's 500ft underground at Yatestoop mine in a chamber that's inaccessible....
