There are 48 km of tunnels that have been created under 150 m of basalt lavas. Fossils of animals that lived during the Cretaceous period can be found here. The mine employs twelve people, three of whom use dump trucks to move sand from within the mine to a storage area on the surface. The floor of the workings is soft, wet and badly rutted.
