Didnt think much of it and said to myself il soon catch him up, only 5 mins at the most from where i was...got up there and no one to be seen |

Recounted in detail elsewhere (I'll have a look for it now) but Barney said they were using a hurricane lantern and it went out three times and on the third time time swung violently where it was hanging. He also said there was as strong smell of tobacco smoke. Shortly after the collapse shifted quite a lot. . I have copied/pasted the story from another thread from 2007 .... Last night Barney, Sharon and I went for a quick look around Cwmorthin - the plan was to get through to Oakeley and return via the Lefel Ffrench and Back Vein incline. For a bit of fun I took along a Storm Lamp mainly to see how much light they actually gave off! On our return I had just crossed the collapsed section when Barney and Sharon shouted to say that there was a pungent smell of tobacco in the air - at this very moment my lamp went out! I relit the lamp and hung it on a hook on the ceiling and awaited the other two explorers. As they came over the top, the lamp, with no contact and no draught in the air at all began to rock violently on the hook and again extinguished. Once the group had reassembled I checked the lamp hoping that the paraffin had run out as I really wanted there to be a natural explanation at that point. To my horror the lamp was still full of oil! Continuing from Merddinemrys story.... While he was being gracefully entertained by the spooks of Cwmorthin, i was having a spot of bother, on the other side of the collapse, with a cloud of white smoke that appeared in the shape of a face, then promptly disappeared. This was about a metre in front of me. It seems that the Cwmorthin spook warns of danger, the 'face' appeared and was clear and detailed. This all cracked off as i was about to attempt to crawl under the DE collapse -- |

Posted: 02/09/2011 03:51:53 Reply | Quote I've taken a few trips into Wheal Bellan over the years and from the first trip, the place always made me feel slightly uncomfortable, though not enough to say give me the willies. The funny thing is, that others on the same trip have spoken of hearing voices in there which I have not. It's a bit of a strange one that I've never been able to explain. I once saw a light in Cligga at the end of a blind heading. Thinking it was my two companions I walked down to meet them, turned the corner believing that they were hiding there with thier lamps out ready to leap out and frighten me, and was greeted with an empty end. A surprise, but I didn't feel scared. So walking back down the drive I scanned the floor thinking my lamp beam may have glanced off a puddle on the floor, but no puddles at all...........Stumped! -- 'Bid me discourse, I will enchant thine ear' IP: 86.178.18.175 |

I'm sure I saw a documentary years ago about a 'haunted' tunnel on the underground and when they measured the infrasound. Posted: 02/09/2011 15:46:25 Reply | Quote Hi Chris, sorry to disappoint you all the "atmosphere " is downstairs! I am not unduly worried about the S.R.T. Rope after all I put it in place 20years ago on the 24 th of Feb according to my note book. The top has always looked a jumble of iron mongery but since it rests on the G.Limestone it is pretty safe. The only problem in the Flats is the poor air quality as has been commented on previously. It was a pity the V.M. Miners did not connect these flats, on High Raise 2nd Sun Vein the other workings on it associated with those close to Wellhope Shaft there is about 1000ft of Hard Rock between the two sets of workings. I still would not linger at the base of the rise. IP: 92.8.157.145 |

Only people with similar abilities to this person could really find out what is down there - http://www.lisawilliams.com/?page=AboutLisa The tragic accident mentioned by 'hymac' above seems to be documented in 'Cwmorthin Slate Quarry' by Graham Isherwood. On page 98 2nd ed, he gives details of the official list of fatal accidents at Cwmorthin between 1875 and 1892. The reference as it appears in Isherwood's book reads: - '1875: A labourer was killed when he fell over a "precipice" ' Perhaps in light of such events we should talk not of spooks etc, but 'spirits of a past life' which I actually prefer and find much more respectful. -- 'no one dares to seek the shafts and treasuries down in the deep places: they are drowned in water- or in a shadow of fear.' In short it reports of one man killed by falling to his death at Cwmorthin and the other killed by an explosion in an underground chamber at Gloddfa Ganol.
