Hi does anyone have any pics or info on the Woodhead mines near Carsphairn?

A mate and i were up there, really interesting place, we noticed that someone presumably the farmer has concreted over the only open adit, sealing over it forever. TW@

There are a few buildings and other interesting things up there, there is an open shaft at the top, an open stope, and a shaft with a metal cover over it.

I will post up my pics soon on the mines section

A comprehensive survey of the mine is to be found in the bulletin of the PDMHS Vol 15 No 6 by messrs Picken,Hicks &
Cressey.
You can access it via their web site.
The top filled in adit did not go very far I went in it a few years ago and it seemed more in the nature of a trial.
As you will read in the above account there was a whole village up there - it was last worked after the first world war and abandoned like most of the British lead mines when the Government subsidy was removed in 1920.
Subsequently the tips were raided for hardcore for forestry roads.

Cheers John, i thought it would have connected with the big shaft with the fence around it a little further up. Yea its a really interesting place, has a nice setting too i think.
Have you been in any of the other shafts there?
Have you seen the adit on the side of the hill to the left as you are aproaching woodhead?

Look forward to seeing your other pics.No we haven't been down any of the shafts. The open stope would seem the best place to have a look but we haven't been back to do it. Quite a bit further over, and overlooking Loch Doon is a hematite mine. I keep meaning to look at it but somehow have never got round to it.
Galloway is full of interesting out of the way mines but only one or two have interesting underground features.

Hi Dave
Of the mines you mention the Drumruck mine is the more interesting
Unfortunately it is waist deep and not too long but has an interesting wagon inside worth looking at.

If you search for Drumruck in the Aditnow mines database Dave you should find my photos of the mine that I took a few years ago. The other copper mine close to Gatehouse is Enrick, but the site - look for Mine Hill Wood near the A75 on the 1:25 000 OS map - is a disappointment. There is just the old access track to the mine site and a choked shaft when you're there. The wood doesn't show any adits, though there must be a drainage one somewhere in that area!
