There was an item on BBC2 Scotland's Landward programme about Stromness. The council had some Heritage Lottery to spend so asked the community what they wanted to use it for.

The decision was to replace concrete slabs that had been used to replace broken paving slabs in the streets of Stromness. Unfortunately the local quarry closed years ago so they contacted the owner and reopened to produce enough to do the job.

The programme is on iPlayer until the end of the week.

Down here in sunny (and it is for once) Cornwall we don't do anything as silly as use local materials. We get chinese granite or reconstituted resin based stuff. No doubt this is due to the extreme scarcity of granite in the south west. IP: 81.153.82.183

Presumably it's cheaper to extract and transport the stuff halfway across the planet than dig it up from the next village.

Why is that?

Chris.

I wish somebody would tell the thieves who keep stealing the stone flags and shipping them South This should include wall capings and stone roof slates.
