Henfwlch, collapse at end of adit
Posted: 21/03/2011 10:08:26 Reply | Quote Following some freak rainfall earlier in the year a mass of ground has come down and covered my access winze to the inner reaches of this mine. It will require a major operation to clear this and make the area safe, so in the meantime the ore barrow etc is no longer accessible. Water must have poured into the mines in this area, a section of packwall has come down in the Talybont deep adit as well, however access to the horse whim is unaffected. I have yet to check Camdwrbach -- ''the stopes soared beyond the range of our caplamps' - David Bick...... How times change IP: 89.240.190.57 |

Henfwlch, collapse at end of adit
Posted: 21/03/2011 20:25:39 Reply | Quote Earlier this month I noticed that a small crown hole (c.4ft diam) has opened into a deep stope on the Glog Fawr Lode about 100m North of the Davey Shaft. It *looks* fairly recent but could have been open for quite a while as (a) there is very strong smell of dead sheep and (b) I hadn't walked that ground since 1993(!). Can anyone narrow the date down a little? Another mine I hadn't walked past for similar length of ti me is Logaulas - a large collapse has occurred, and been fenced, about 100m NE of Worsley's Shaft. Can anyone clarify when it occurred and how deep it is? Many thanks! IP: 2.100.62.33 |

Posted: 04/04/2011 15:59:05 Reply | Quote I have started work clearing my winze at the end of the Henfwlch adit. It appears that muck at the back and the timber placed to retain it has been washed into the winze. I have fixed an Acro across at the back and intend to spile it with steel rods, hopefully a permanent solution. The rest of the mine is still explorable OK, but please do not interfere with any of my tools etc. Will advise when finished. I have also cleared the collapse of packwall in the Talybont deep adit which blocked the WMS roadway west. It does not lead anywhere but adds a bit of interest to the mine. I also inspected the timbering, which although starting to rot in places the road is still useable with care. A visit has been reported by its members on the 28 Days Later website. These visitors have not only been careful with their explorations but actually tidied up the place a bit. As far as I am concerned 28DL are now welcome into any of my projects, more so than an individual who stole a miners pick from Henfwlch and relocated it to his private collection in Dolgellau. This was beyond the winze I worked on my own to sink for the benefit of everyone, and demonstrates a bizarre way of thanking me for my efforts. -- ''the stopes soared beyond the range of our caplamps' - David Bick...... Posted: 21/06/2011 15:30:45 Reply | Quote The project is coming on OK, but.... If anyone goes in there please stay away from my working area at the end, and for good reason. I am extending the original winze outbye as well as clearing it. Working a few feet outbye I removed a large rock and looking down into the hole saw down almost into the main stope. It is a mere foot or so of compressed material you stand on with nothing underneath. I have laid a good length of about 6inch diam larch outbye of this area and intend to work belayed to it. The heavy fall of rain that produced the fall that blocked my winze must have washed a lot of material away into the stope below leaving just a foot or so in the floor of the level. -- ''the stopes soared beyond the range of our caplamps' - David Bick...... The top of the winze is now secured with steel and concrete, next task is to clear it of the debis of mud, rock, and fallen timber. There should be traces of the old catwalk visible now. I was going to go in yesterday but the weather was appaling so I came home early. Posted: 14/05/2012 09:14:30 Reply | Quote I revisited this mine yesterday and the max water depth is now only knee deep. The remains of another ore barrow are now uncovered in a side level to the left going in, the wheel is missing. There is also the bits of a third on the bank of deads inbye of my concrete winze. Unfortunately a drainage culvert running under the remains of the dressing floors has become blocked so now the discharge from the adit is flooding this area. It would be nice if the place could receive some attention, I am sure that clearing the dressing area would reveal much. -- 'Not gods—Englishmen, which is the next best thing' Micheal Cain; 'The man who would be king' IP: 2.96.75.132 |
