Just a quick one... been bugging me since coming back home....

Is it normal to have to top up an Oldham Battery every time its used? I mean, its almost empty water wise after a few hours of use (Or moving the damn thing) theres no cracks or leaks in the case either.... Still works fine though...

No it will only loose "water" when over charging.
It must be leaking ( and it's acid) which can rot belts & rigging.
Can you describe the battery, does it have two small holes in the front?

Observe its charging behaviour after topping up. If it gasses visibly it is being overcharged and I would expect to see a fall in the electrolyte level.
If the electrolyte is up to the mark and its loosing it during use I would tend to agree with Colin in that it must be leaking and poses a major threat to tackle especially nylon SRT ropes.

It would do no harm to perform a duration test after charging, or better still a few days after charging. You may have a shock.

There really are better alternatives to carrying a lump of lead around with you these days.

As rufenig says knowing the type may help. This pic is of the 'Maintenance Free' version, (can only be topped up through plugs in the top).
It still leaks through vents if overfilled though.

If there is no leak, (or overfilling) the suggestion of overcharging may apply as level fluctuations due to charge state are self correcting.

Thanks guys,

Roy, I do have an alternative... I have one of your lamps.... and mighty fine it is too! The Oldham is used for guests.... and well, yes, its old and heavy, agreed. After charging, 7 hours can be achieved. Charge it and leave it for a few days, and an hour tops before its dying.

The Battery is the type with the 2 holes for filling on each cell 1/5 the way down from the top. Same as yours Morlock, but with the holes. Its charged in a container, with a papered base, which shows no signs of liquid. It lives in said container, even when not on charge.

It seems to only loose the distilled water when its in use. Its left fully charged (Although it self discharges quickly) but the levels dont change.

I reckon the thing is rotting inside and its time to get rid. My last attempt in making a battery pack ended, just as Mr Fellows predicted, in a botched failure.!

Sadly Roy, this was s/hand, from a customer of yours who I convinced he diddnt need 2 of your lamps... (Its a Gokang style with your mods) Best lamp Ive ever used, infact better than a similar lamp used at work.... Must be your LED magic in the head...

I will alter the ref's on the images... what do you want me to change? If you can do it from your computer, Im fine with that any time from you, otherwise, let me know the error of my ways, and I will do it forthwith!
