Miners songs - Folk on the BBC
Posted: 15/12/2010 09:47:26 Reply | Quote This series (usually after Midnight on BBC4) contained some unexpected mining stuff - clips probably recorded in the 1950's included some very traditional bits with steam winders etc probably in Durham or Northumberland, and bits about an appeal probably at the same time to record miners' songs before they were lost. I only caught snipets of the programmes so no doubt someone can come with links etc. IP: 62.171.194.37 |

Posted: 16/12/2010 08:56:58 Reply | Quote The appeal for songs was about 1949 or 1950 from what I remember - I've seen the clip in question where the folklorist Bert Llloyd got an old Durham miner to sing "The Colliers Rant" and put out an appeal for anyone who knew any similar songs to get in touch through the union. He did get a fair response to this, and the results got into print as "Come All Ye Bold Miners", probably out of print but Mike will doubtless have a copy! -- I sold my soul to Satan, but he brought it back and demanded a refund....
