I've just posted a similar message on Uk caving. Anyway Simple Machine Forums support a ?imode switch that strips away the screen furniture, although the result is a bit on the minimal side.

Is there a switch available here so that only the forum bit of the site can be rendered ?

I doubt it would be practically possible - the site is custom-built and as such is unique. Whilst it should be theoretically possible to build a 'mobile' version of the site, I doubt SimonRL would be able to take a couple of weeks off work to build it.

The forum is an integral part of the overall site - rather than AN being either an images website with a forum bolted on; or a forum with an images website site bolted on. Thus, the user permissions are consistent across the whole site rather than - for example - separate logins being needed for forum and galleries.

As such, it works very well in terms of linking all the data (eg mine > photograph, mine > events etc) but that does mean that any work to modify the way the site works has to be coded by SimonRL rather than upgrading (part of) the underlying software.

Hi Vanoord,

Yes I appreciate that being a developer myself - non web, but console or backend if I can avoid doing web front end stuff. I'm a .Net man at work, but am already thinking that it could well be a blind avenue the way things are going. I also had a similar feeling with regards to the way that mobile devices will make us reconsider how we interact with the internet, especially with regard to the cheap and powerful android phones. In any case, it will be interesting to see how things develop over the next few years.

Cheers,

Robin

Hi Robin

You can already go part way to what you're looking for (I think, and if I've read it correctly). Have a look under 'My AditNow' > 'My Account & Profile', from there (scroll down the page) you can turn off the page headers, which removes the random image and the search box on all pages except the home page. That radically speeds up page load time on all pages including forum pages.

Hope that helps?

Thanks Simon,

Yes, that looks quite reasonable on a hand held device.

Good news, thanks Smile

You can also (but you've probably seen it if you've seen the option to toggle the headers) turn off the drop-down navigation as well. That makes it much more mobile friendly. And each section has a simple home page with a bulletted list of pages within.
