New site feature - improved navigation

Following the server move, I've introduced a couple of new site features.

IMPROVED NAVIGATION

When I launched the current version of the site I added simple drop-down navigation from a horizontal navigation bar which replaced a really awkward long list of pages in the left hand column of the old site.

However not everybody liked the drop-downs, they were pretty big, and took up a lot of screen space.

The worst offender was for the forum, so I reduced the number of links in this, but this meant you couldn't access an individual area of the forum with a single click.

I know I'm not going to ever create a navigation system that everybody likes Wink but having done a lot of usability research with clients I know that drop-down, slide-out, drop-down style menus aren't popular. One slip with the mouse and you've got to start over...

And AditNow has a lot of pages so the menus are always going to be pretty big - otherwise pages are nigh-on impossibe to navigate to.

So, some improvements have been made to the drop-downs. They're now as small as I can get them, and even the biggest (the forum one) fits (just) into a typical 1024x768 screen).

The forum one now contains all links again, so you can single click access any forum area.

BUT...

But, if you absolutely hate drop-downs, you can now turn them off! Or if you're using a mobile device and find them awkward.

In conjunction with this, every section of the site now has a really simple home page with a bulletted list of all pages in the section. So if you turn off the drop-downs, all you need to is click on the top level link and you'll get a page like this (Mines, Quarries & Sites in this case) [link]

To configure your navigation preference:

Go to your 'My Account & Profile' page [link] under 'My AditNow', and scroll down until you see 'Navigation style', change your prefence and click 'Update >>'

(click image to open full size image in new window)

The basic idea is single click access to any page in the site for those that like the drop-downs and the ability to turn them of altogether if you don't
