Just come across this german coal mine site, it is all in German of course, but with Google translate the site is a tad easier to understand, interestingly they went through closures and protests just like our pits in the late 1980's..anyway hope this link works .

I know we knock the Germans but can't help but feel sadened by events that took place over there, just like here. Plenty of organised marches and protests, petitions to Goverment and so on, but all to no avail. Just why all those goverment officials bothered going down the mine I don't know, photo oportunities ,big smiles and bullshit, when all along just like in the UK, the mines WERE GOING TO CLOSE, it was a done deal even when it all started way back in the 1980's & we thought it was just Maggie Thatcher!!
