Must say I'm very impressed by the look of this site, Is it conserved as is, or is it going to get the makeover treatment(hopefully not)?.
It looks very complete.

Yup. Completely abandoned. We came across it whilst driving between Chillagoe & Cairns (i.e. on the main road), and stopped off for a poke about. I don't recall there being any issues with investigating it. Didn't find any underground stuff though, as if we had, we'd have looked, having our caving gear with us.

Can't remember much of interest, but it does (did) look exactly like that.

But as a smelting site it looks quite complete, wouldn't mind a nose! Or does it look busier than what it actually is?

It is a pretty amazing site. The main areas are fenced off with posts and a flimsy chain and plenty of warnings about asbestos and nasty chemicals and threats of fines. It's also a National Park on the strength of its heritage value. The nearest reasonable sized mines are Chillagoe Consols, Ruddygore and Zillmanton all flooded to within 10m of surface so not a lot of exploring to do in the immediate Chillagoe area. This is only about a kilometre outside of the township and benefits a bit because it's almost a three hour drive from Cairns which keeps all but the keenest tourists away. As far as I know there are no plans to 'upgrade' it in any way.

All the best from a very rainy Chillagoe,
