The mines here must be some of the most northernly in the world. Anyhow here's a website giving a brief history: [link]

I don't know about underground, but the surface remains are certainly very impressive. Obviously the danger of coming across polar bears is an issue to be taken into account, although many of the mines in Northwestern America have similar access difficulties due to grizzly bears.

Interesting. I always thought the Brora Mines in Scotland were the most northern mines in Europe. Not anymore Sad

Ah, In Shetland? I heard there were some mines in Shetland. I don't think there are any in the Faroes, which is annoying because if there were.. that'd be an even better excuse to go there Wink

Brora is on mainland Scotland, just 20 miles south west of Wick. Shetland, these are mainly metal mines.
