From what i understand, if you have a handheld unit the route you have walked can be down loaded onto a map (part of the software) then saved and shared as any other document. Posted: 12/09/2008 10:47:00 Reply | Quote I have a Garmin Etrex Vista which I take with me when I go walking. As long as it is switched on it will record my route, without prompting. I then download this to Memory Map ( My mapping software) and this shows my route on an OS map. I can then save this route and upload it to other devices. Posted: 12/09/2008 10:52:40 Reply | Quote As I understand it most GPS units create a log file which is your route consisting of time, location etc. It is basically a type of text/csv file in format. You can convert that to a gpx file which is fast becoming the file type to utilise in such applications like Google and the Ordnance survey's own API. This allows you through an XML file to load the gpx file and you see your track/waypoints/comments/photos etc displayed on the map. It's very good, very useful and although I don't use GPS, I think it will do what is being discussed. One note of caution is that MemoryMap shows Public Rights of Way through Penrhyn Quarry that closed years ago. Other PROW's are also suspect....but this, I suspect, is Gwynedd County Council's fault for non-notification (as with the street name changes etc etc) There are some very "iffy" databases out there as a result!
