In a large number of aspects of modern Britain, the UK is very London-centric, including the "Sarf Ease" as the locals call it. One exception is mining, and in that area at least, we lurcals are very much in a backwater. So I am not going to pretend that much of our mine exploration activity in this area is necessarily going to be that interesting to those from 'mainstream' regions, but I am happy to be a contact for any member who wants to know more, or is interested in paying us a visit. Welcome Pete!
Im sure some of us will come and haunt you one weekend. We have had many conversations on here about finding somewhere new to go instead of Wales!
I would imagine you have been most places around the country, but you will find folks on here from most corners should the need arise Thumbs Up

Excluding non-extractive sites, the area contains underground workings for

Gypsum
Coal
Chalk
Flint
Silver sand
Fullers earth
Building stone
Firestone
Hearthstone
Iron

But then you all knew that, didn't you?

Peter

You sound like just the man I have been looking for so to speak.

I work in Reading during the week (and was aware of the Emmer Green chalk mine in Reading but can't find out how to get a visit organised as the contact I have found seems to have disappeared) and spend every other weekend in Reading. I then return to my place in Cardiff alternate weekends.

I have been looking for some underground action that does not involve a drive to either the south west or north wales.

I would be very keen for you to show me around some of the "saff east" action if possible, please.

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I have asked someone who the contact is, and will let you know as and when I get a reply.

As for occupying your alternate spare weekends with a look-see around Surrey, no problem at all.

You are no doubt aware that there is much detail about Emma Green here including the access shaft although it hasn't been updated recently. Anyway just in case...........

Thanks for that. That is the one decent source of information I had found but can't find Graham Old to arrange a visit. Looks like a cool place to visit.

When you click on his name, it takes you to a list of contact details which does not include him and has not been updated for a while.

Any other ideas welcome

Cheers

Surrender Thumbs Up

I suppose I should add some info and photos of the Surrey sites, or indeed some of the gypsum mines. Problem is my pics are never that good.

Peter

The contact details would be great.

I am busy doing "lovely things" with the missus for the next couple of weekends but will drop you a PM later in the month and maybe we could arrange something for August.

Many thanks and I look forward to seeing some of the photos
Thumbs Up

Peter. Do you know whether it is possible to arrange underground visits to the Mountfield/Robertsbridge Gypsum Mines? IP: 86.162.35.211

We tried to arrange one for NAMHO2005 but were told that visits are now strictly limited to BG clients. So you will need to order a few thousand plasterboard panels first.

Thanks Peter. I thought that might be the case, as it so often is these days. However, having just managed to arrange a group visit underground at Boulby later in the year, I hoped it might be possible elsewhere. IP: 86.162.35.211

Pity that I used to live in Sussex, but never got round to visiting any mines. Have come across the odd chalk pit in the past though.

When I have got my old photos together to scan them, I will make adding pics of Mountfield and Brightling to this site a priority. We had a memorable trip round Mountfield in the early 90s when it was on care and maintenance.

AdrianP and myself have agreed to add many South East mines and quarries (underground ones) to the database between us. There. Now we are committed to doing it. Thumb Up

I am quite stunned at the number of photos Adrian and yourself have uploaded in the couple of weeks or so since you joined Adit Now! Adrian is now in amongst the top 10 contributors!

So am I. Brilliant contribution but finding time to look at them all is a problem at my age. Still the weather is helping. Getting much Welsh weather down here at the moment.
